Skin Boosters Explained

Skin Boosters Explained: What They Are, How They Work and Who They’re For | Dr Laura Milligan

By Dr Laura Milligan, Optimise Medical

If you’ve been looking into treatments to improve your skin, you’ve probably come across the term skin booster. It’s one of those phrases that’s everywhere at the moment, but it’s not always clear what it actually means.

One of the questions I hear most often in clinic is, “Is it a filler?”

The answer is no.

Skin boosters don’t add volume or change the shape of your face. Instead, they improve the quality of your skin from within, helping it look healthier, brighter and more hydrated. The aim isn’t to make you look different; it’s to help you look like you’ve had a really good night’s sleep or just come back from holiday.

At Optimise Medical, we offer two of the most effective skin boosters available: Profhilo® and Teosyal Redensity 1®. Although they both improve skin quality, they do it in slightly different ways.

So, what exactly is a skin booster?

Think of a skin booster as a treatment for your skin rather than your face.

As we get older, our skin naturally loses collagen, elastin and moisture. That’s why it can start to feel thinner, look dull or develop those fine lines that skincare alone doesn’t seem to shift.

Skin boosters work beneath the surface of the skin, where creams simply can’t reach. By delivering hyaluronic acid directly into the skin, they improve hydration and encourage your body to produce more collagen over time.

The result isn’t an instant transformation. Instead, your skin gradually becomes smoother, fresher and healthier over the weeks following treatment.

Patients often tell me they can’t quite put their finger on what’s changed—they just feel they look less tired.

Who are skin boosters suitable for?

There’s a common misconception that injectable treatments are only for people trying to reverse ageing.

In reality, skin boosters are suitable for a huge range of people.

Some patients in their late twenties or early thirties choose them as a preventative treatment to maintain healthy skin. Others come in because they’ve started noticing dehydration, fine lines or a loss of glow.

They’re also incredibly popular with women experiencing hormonal changes, when the skin can suddenly feel drier or less elastic.

Skin boosters may be right for you if you’ve noticed:

  • Skin that looks dull or tired
  • Fine lines developing around the face
  • Dehydration that skincare isn’t improving
  • Loss of firmness
  • Crepey skin on the neck or lower face
  • A general feeling that your skin has lost its radiance

The biggest compliment after treatment is usually, “You look really well,” rather than, “Have you had something done?”

Profhilo® – for deep hydration and firmer skin

Profhilo has become one of the best-known injectable skin treatments, and for good reason.

It contains a very high concentration of hyaluronic acid, which spreads through the skin after injection rather than staying in one place like a filler would.

As well as boosting hydration, it stimulates collagen and elastin production, helping improve skin firmness over time.

I often recommend Profhilo for patients whose skin is beginning to feel thinner or less elastic, particularly around the face, neck and décolletage.

Treatment is straightforward. Most people have two treatments a month apart and then ideally one every three months depending on how their skin ages.

Redensity 1®, ideal for hydration and improving skin texture

Redensity 1 works a little differently.

Alongside hyaluronic acid, it contains a blend of amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that nourish the skin while improving hydration.

It’s an excellent option if your main concerns are skin texture, dehydration or those first signs of ageing that make your skin look a little tired.

Because it’s injected more precisely across the treatment area, it’s also useful for areas where we want to improve skin quality without adding volume.

Many patients choose Redensity 1 simply because they want healthier-looking skin rather than dramatic aesthetic changes.

What happens during treatment?

Skin booster appointments are usually quite relaxed and take around half an hour.

After we’ve discussed your concerns and examined your skin, I’ll clean the treatment area before carrying out a series of small injections.

Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the treatment is.

Afterwards, you might notice a little redness, some tiny bumps where the product has been injected or the occasional small bruise. These usually settle within a day or two, and most people go straight back to work afterwards.

When will I see results?

This is probably the second most common question I get asked.

Unlike fillers, skin boosters don’t produce instant results.

Usually, patients notice their skin feels more hydrated within the first couple of weeks. Over the following months, as collagen production increases, the skin often becomes smoother, brighter and firmer.

It’s a gradual improvement, which is exactly why the results look so natural.

Can skin boosters be combined with other treatments?

Absolutely.

In fact, they often work even better as part of a wider treatment plan.

Depending on your skin and your goals, we might recommend combining skin boosters with treatments such as microneedling, medical-grade skincare, anti-wrinkle injections or Polynucleotides.

Every patient is different, so there’s no one-size-fits-all approach.

Which skin booster is right for me?

There’s no universal answer because everyone’s skin is different.

If your biggest concern is overall hydration and skin firmness, Profhilo is often an excellent choice.

If you’re more focused on improving skin texture, dehydration or treating delicate areas, Redensity 1 may be the better option.

During your consultation, we’ll talk through what’s bothering you, examine your skin properly and decide together which treatment is likely to give you the best result.

Sometimes it’s one treatment. Sometimes it’s a combination.

Final thoughts

One of the things I enjoy most about skin boosters is how subtle the results are.

People rarely notice you’ve had a treatment. They simply notice that you look healthier, fresher and more rested.

At Optimise Medical, our focus has always been on natural-looking results that help you feel more confident without changing who you are.

If you’ve been wondering whether skin boosters could help your skin, the best place to start is with a consultation. We’ll assess your skin, answer your questions honestly and recommend a treatment plan that’s tailored specifically to you—whether that’s Profhilo, Redensity 1 or something completely different.

Because the best treatment isn’t always the newest one—it’s the one that’s right for you.
