Polynucleotides

Polynucleotides are an exciting development in aesthetic medicine, despite having been used for over 40 years in conventional medicine eg for cartilage restoration and scar healing. They are made up of tiny fragments of DNA, derived from fish gonads, which stimulate the body’s natural repair mechanism. They signal to your cells to make collagen and elastin which improves the skin texture and firmness. They also increase hydration levels and decrease inflammation so are perfect for people with eczema or rosacea.

Polynucleotides can be used on the face, neck, décolletage and hands but the biggest development has been in the treatment of under eye skin which is a notoriously hard to treat area. Polynucleotides will not cause any long term swelling or issues that traditional tear trough filler can cause, so they are incredible safe to use. Often patients would be poor candidates for tear trough filler eg if they have poor skin quality around the eye, but for them polynucleotides would be a perfect treatment.

Numbing cream is applied and the product is injected either with a needle or cannula just under the skin. Three to four treatments are required (two to four weeks apart) and then a treatment every six to nine months is required for maintenance.

Aftercare

After treatment, I advise my patients not to do anything that will make them hot or flushed (red in the face) otherwise there is a risk of the Botox spreading to a muscle we are not intending to treat. Examples of this would be exercise, saunas, sunbeds (don’t use sunbeds ever anyway!), lots of alcohol or facials. After 24 hours you can do any of the above as the Botox won’t move after this.
